The Contact

A new building that is a part and apart from the existing buildings.

Fall 2023, MIT Core I Studio.
Instructed by Carrie Norman.

The third exercise of the Core I studio is to make a building that is a part and apart from existing buildings. A public archive for the Department of Architecture, the project is at an empty courtyard enclosed by four MIT buildings. Focusing on the reflective and transparent qualities of glazing surfaces, the building features two curtain wall facades that mirror existing facades. The new facades are designed to capture various sightlines and establish connections between the public and the institute.

The archive becomes a part of the existing building as its edge is tangent to one facade and its tips touch the surrounding buildings. Large programs such as the auditorium are arranged in line with existing public entrance and integrated within the existing building. The archive also wants to be apart from the existing building, with the distance between the new facade and old facade, making four new outdoor courtyards. This distance enables new exchange of views between MIT members and visitors of the archive, between the institute and the public.
